Short's Yard is Andrew's latest pocket-sized N Gauge shunting layout, which takes its name from the fact that it measures just 24 x 8 . However, despite it s diminutive size and simple track plan which incorporates just one point, the layout still affords one or two interesting train movements, with an industrial siding, small goods/coal yard and diesel stabling/refuelling siding providing a fair amount of operating potential. Trackwork is Peco, the fittings, buildings etc are a mixture if scratch/kit-built/ready-made, while one or two Woodland Scenics products are also in evidence. Operation is provided via a Gaugemaster hand-held controller, with the solitary point and isolating sections operated from a small control box at the rear of the layout. A sector plate, constructed from a small piece of plywood, angled metal strip and some old Meccano parts, serves as a fiddle yard. Short's Yard took about a month to construct, and is completely self-contained, with the layout/traverser/controls all located on the same board.
